About the Single Winner Theory category

Single Winner Elections try to find one candidate for one seat.

The most common voting system used by Single Winner Elections is First Past The Post, but since you’re here you’re probably already familiar with its failings.

It’s key to differentiate Single Winner Elections from Multi Winner Elections which are elections for bodies, such as boards, councils or Congress.
The US uses districting in order to divide a board election into multiple Single Winner Elections, but there are strong arguments for instead using a Multi Winner Election Method in order to establish proportional representation. But that’s not for this forum!

Some types of systems:

  • Ordinal Vs Cardinal (Ranked vs Rated)
  • Party Vs Candidate
  • Number of Voters Vs Intensity of Approval
